I am still humbled and honored to have received the inaugural German American Business Circle Scholarship last year and am excited to share my future plans with the GABC.

This summer I will be visiting the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) in Philadelphia to work in the lab of Dr. Dieter Schifferli to research bacterial pathogenesis with funding from the Merck Internships for Excellence in Science Program.

Following my internship, I will be spending a semester at the University of Cologne (Universität zu Köln) to further my German studies. My semester abroad is partially funded by the GABC Scholarship, the Richard S. Pett Academic Travel Award, and a W&J International Program Fund Award.

After graduation from Washington & Jefferson College with a double major in German and cell/molecular biology in 2017, I plan to pursue a Ph.D. in molecular microbiology or a related field. I am very interested in then completing a postdoctoral fellowship in Germany or another German-speaking country.

My long-term goal is to research and teach at an educational institution in the United States. During this time, I hope to establish more exchange programs between German and American students who want to study science abroad.

Mr. Brown, a sophomore at W&J College, was named in September 2014 as recipient of the inaugural $2,500 scholarship of the German American Business Circle in cooperation with the Pittsburgh Rotary Club Foundation. The scholarship is intended to benefit collegiate-level students in Western Pennsylvania who demonstrate academic excellence and strong interest in German-American business affairs and culture, and who plan to study at an accredited institution of higher learning in Germany.
