PITTSBURGH, Dec. 1, 2015 – Angela Marie Nied, a sophomore at Washington & Jefferson College, has been named recipient of the second annual $2,500 scholarship of the German American Business Circle in cooperation with the Pittsburgh Rotary Club Foundation.

Nied received her check at the GABC's fall meeting held last evening at the Hofbrauhaus Pittsburgh.

The scholarship is intended to benefit collegiate-level students from Western Pennsylvania who demonstrate academic excellence and strong interest in German-American business affairs and culture, and who plan to further their studies through study abroad at an accredited institution of higher learning in Germany.

Nied is pursuing a double major in international business and German with plans to study these subjects at the University of Cologne. The daughter of Michele and Peter Nied of Murrysville, she is a graduate of Franklin Regional High School and spent a year in Bergen, Norway as a Rotary Exchange Student. She is a member of Delta Phi Omega, has earned Dean’s List honors for all semesters at W&J, is a member of other honorary sororities and is a Rotary Youth Ambassador. She also serves as vice president of Penhellenic for Delta Gamma, director of philanthropy for The Panhellenic Council and executive coordinator for DubStep Dance-a-Thon.

“I would like to create connections that may bloom into job options for a position in a German business, either in the U.S. or abroad,” said Nied. “Thousands of U.S. and German companies depend on a thriving partnership, and I aspire to one day take part in and foster this continuing relationship.”

The GABC is the executive networking and education arm of the German American Chamber of Commerce, Pittsburgh. The Scholarship Selection Committee includes a representative from each of the GABC’s three founding firms – Ardex Americas, BKD, LLP and Cohen & Grigsby – as well as the sitting chair of the PRCF and the sitting president of the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh.

The GABC is a unifying force and advocate for the 70 German owned companies employing 11,000 in Pittsburgh. With a base of human capital in manufacturing, finance, business services and energy, the region is creating green new industries based on R&D, innovation and entrepreneurship.
